Potted Up Pumpkin Seeds

I ended up soaking the seeds 5 days and got them all potted up today.

The extra plant in the back is an old seed that I found in my seed stash. I had stuck it in a pot at an earlier date, it’s off to a good start.

Giant pumpkin seeds, should you file the edges?

I got my seeds today from Howard Dill. I received 2 seeds from a 1187 pound pumpkin grown by Companion, 2 seeds from a 1378 pound pumpkin grown by Companion and 1 seed from a 1419 pound pumpkin grown by Reid.

I’m starting one of each, and saving the two extra seeds for next year.

I like to file the edges of my giant pumpkin seeds. The outer shell is very tough and can slow down or prevent germination. Sense I only buy a few very expensive seeds at a time, I like to insure the germination rate any way I can.

Using a nail file, I file all around the edges except for the pointed end. You need to file lightly until you reach the darker inner seed. The picture below shows a un-filed and a filed giant pumpkin seed.

After filing, I soak them in tap water, usually for 2-3 days
